“Like the King of France….”

Hi Everyone!

Andrea Gagliarducci has written a good reflection over at Catholic News Agency about Fátima and the consecration. I encourage people to read it. I especially like how he points out Pope St. Paul VI’s text during the closing of the third session. That is a very important text.

Something that came up in the article gives me an opportunity to make an observation.

There is a famous text that Sr. Lúcia had written in the early 1930s. After Our Lady had appeared in 1929 to request the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, this request was not fulfilled in time. Therefore, all of the evils predicted by Our Lady in the second part of the Secret came to pass.

In a follow-up to this matter, Sr. Lúcia wrote the following, attributing these words to a heavenly communication:

“They did not wish to attend to my request!… Like the King of France, they will repent and do it, but it will be late. Russia will have now spread its errors over the world, provoking wars, persecutions of the Church: the Holy Father will have much to suffer.” Memorias, page 196.

Unfortunately, this quote is often misattributed to Our Lord (Nosso Senhor) when it was Our Lady (Nossa Senhora) who said it to Sr. Lúcia.

I’m not quite sure how the mistranslation came to be, but I do know that it’s been in the English-speaking world for several decades now.
