Prayer During Papal Trip to Fátima

A kind friend sent to me a copy of the Portuguese text of a prayer that will be said by Pope Francis in his upcoming pilgrimage to Fátima. I present the Portuguese with an unofficial English translation (courtesy of Marco da Vinha).

English Translation:

Hail Queen, blessed Virgin of Fatima, Lady of the Immaculate Heart, refuge and path that guides to God! Pilgrim of the Light that we receive from your hands, I thank God the Father that, at all times and places, acts in human history; pilgrim of the Peace that you announce here, I praise Christ, our peace, and for the world I ask for concord among all peoples; pilgrim of the Hope which the Spirit encourages, I want to be prophet and messenger so as to wash the feet of all at the same table that unites us.

Hail Mother of Mercy, Lady of the white robe! At this place where one hundred years ago you showed all the designs of our God’s mercy, I look upon your robe of light and, as the bishop in white[i], I remind those that, robed in baptismal white, want to live in God and pray the mysteries of Christ to attain peace.

Hail, life and sweetness, hail, our hope, o Pilgrim Virgin, o Universal Queen! In the most intimate of your being, in your Immaculate Heart, see the joys of man[ii] when pilgrimaging to the Heavenly Homeland. In the most intimate of your being, in your Immaculate Heart, seethe pains of the human family that moans and cries in this valley of tears. In the most intimate of your being, in your Immaculate Heart, adorn us with the glow of all the jewels of your crown and make us pilgrims as You were pilgrim. With your virginal smile strengthen the joy of the Church of Christ. With your sweet gaze strengthen the hope of children of God. With the praying hands that you raise to the Lord unite all in one human family.

O clement, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary, Queen of the Rosary of Fatima! Make us follow the example of the Blessed Francisco and Jacinta, and of all who give themselves to the message of the Gospel. Thus, we will travel all routes, we will be pilgrims of all walks, we will knock down all the walls and will overcome all borders, going in the direction of all peripheries, there revealing the justice and peace of God. We will be, in the joy of the Gospel, the Church vested in white, of the whiteness cleansed in the blood of the Lamb spilt in all the wars that destroy the world we live in.

[i] [Translator’s Note: the Portuguese here is not clear. It can either be “the bishop” or “a bishop”….]
[KJS Note (5-14-17 A.D.): The Portuguese journalist Aura Miguel, asked Pope Francis about this text during the return journey to Rome. According to an unofficial English translation from CNS (there are some differences from the Italian on the Vatican’s web site), the exchange is as follows:

Aura Miguel (Radio Renascença): Your Holiness, in Fatima you presented yourself as the “bishop dressed in white.” Up to now, this expression applied rather to the vision of the third part of the secret, St. John Paul II, the martyrs of the twentieth century. What does it mean now, your identification with this expression?

Pope Francis: The prayer, that, I did not write it… the sanctuary wrote it… but also I have tried because they said this, and there is a connection with the white. The bishop of white, Our Lady of white, the white glow of the innocence of children  after Baptism and innocence… there is a connection to the color white in that prayer. I believe – because I did not write it – but I believe that literally they have tried to express with white that desire for innocence, for peace… innocence: to not hurt the other … to not create conflict, the same.

Miguel: Is it a revision of the interpretation…

Pope Francis: No, but that vision … I believe that then Cardinal Ratzinger, at that time prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith, explained everything clearly. Thank you.]
